proofreading

is the final step before going to press after a Substantive Edit, or a Copyedit and is already formatted.

By this time, your manuscript has been reviewed at least five times.  Some manuscripts require dozens of reviews.

The number of edits will depend on the type of manuscript and the size of the word count.

In general, your manuscript is reviewed during the proofreading process for consistency with standard and nonstandard grammar, punctuation, misspellings, design format, numbers, labels, and consistency in author’s voice.

Publishers are very busy these days, and presenting a very clean, professional copy of your book for them sets you apart from the crowd.
